A ‘number’ of Premier League clubs are considering installing safe standing sections in time for next season, talkSPORT has been told.62 per cent of MPs now support standing in the top two divisions, according to a survey.2

Rail seating could soon be utilised by Premier League clubs

The increased support has led to speculation a law-change could soon occur, which would overturn the all-seater legislation introduced at the start of the 1994/95 season at the recommendation of the Taylor Report into the Hillsborough disaster.Michael Burnett, the Managing Director of Ferco Seating, said: “There are two aspects to it. Firstly, it produces the right crowd experience and secondly it might even provide additional revenue for the clubs.”Mr Burnett believes the rail seating section installed during the construction of Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium showed there is backing for safe standing. He continued: “Because the seats are still available, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport could say they’re not approving standing at football grounds… they’re just approving putting handrails behind ordinary seats.“It’s a typical politician’s way of nearly admitting that they want to change something.”Wolves installed various safe standing options at Molineux in January, making them the first Premier League club to do so at their current stadium.

Mr Burnett could not reveal the identities of the clubs in talks with Ferco Seating, but he did tell talkSPORT: “[The clubs] are going to be there [the Premier League] next year, that’s for sure. They’re not in the relegation zone.”Ferco Seating installed nearly 3,000 rail seats at Celtic Park in 2016.2

Celtic’s Supporter Liaison Officer, JP Taylor, later told talkSPORT the decision to introduce a safe standing area has ‘revolutionised the atmosphere’ at the Glasgow stadium.Standing sections are common in Europe with Bundesliga clubs among those using them to improve the matchday experience.
