Gonzalo Higuain may struggle to impress for Chelsea as he is not suited to Premier League football, Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann believes.Higuain’s long-awaited move to Stamford Bridge was confirmed earlier this week with the Argentina international joining from Juventus on loan for the remainder of the season.He was ineligible to feature in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg defeat of Tottenham as the transfer was not completed before’s Wednesday’s 12pm deadline, but Higuain is expected to debut in Sunday’s FA Cup fourth round visit of Sheffield Wednesday – which you can listen to LIVE on talkSPORT.2

With Alvaro Morata being allowed to leave Chelsea, and Olivier Giroud doing little to impress, Chelsea’s hopes for the rest of 2018/19 rest entirely on Higuain.If he does not prove to be the answer to the Blues’ goal scoring woes it will be a dour end to the season, and many believe Maurizio Sarri, the manager, is at risk of losing his job unless Higuain starts banging them in.But he will not be the solution according to Hamann, who sees comparisons between Higuain and Fernando Morientes – the former Spain striker who was one of Europe’s most feared marksmen before he moved to the Premier League in 2005.Speaking toracingpost.com/sport, Hamann said: “I do wonder if the Premier League is the place for a striker like Higuain, who is 31 and has only scored once since October. “I remember when Liverpool signed Fernando Morientes in 2005 he was one of the best in the business, but he struggled at Anfield.“He struggled with a very different style of play and after 18 indifferent months he went to Valencia where he took off again.“Chelsea have got two strikers in the same category in Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata and they are both finding it hard.”2

Morientes’ rapid deterioration was a shock to many

Liverpool were lauded for capturing Morientes in January 2005 for a rumoured 6.3million, with the Reds believed to have completed something of a coup in securing the then Real Madrid striker’s signature.However he struggled to ever adapt to English football, and Morientes scored just eight Premier League goals in the year-and-a-half between his moving to Anfield and being sold to Valencia for less than half the fee Liverpool paid for him.
