A Sunday Times journalist, who wished to remain anonymous, has accused a man in his twenties of chanting ‘Spurs are on their way to Auschwitz, Hitlers gonna gas them again’ in the Kingsland stand just ten minutes into the game. The supporter was told his song was racist and replied ‘Youd better not come back next week’. The mans friend was then allegedly heard singing ‘Same old Tottenham, all need gassing’ and ‘Get in the showers’.The pair are said to have left their seats before half-time while shouting abuse at the journalist, who reported the incident to stewards. The journalist moved seats in the second-half as another Southampton supporter told him: ‘Ill see you after the game’. Stewards are believed to have said they would report the incident to the club and anti-racism organisation Kick it Out.This is the latest in a recent string of racist incidents which have marred English football over the past season.Chelsea fans were accused of anti-Semitic chanting during a Europa League tie against MOL Vidi in December, while Raheem Sterling, the Manchester City forward, was racially abused at Stamford Bridge the same month. The Metropolitan Police announced a ‘zero tolerance’ policy to hateful language when Spurs played Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final a month later.Tottenham have also been urged to dissuade supporters from using the word ‘Yid’ in reference to themselves by the World Jewish Congress and the Board of Deputies of British Jews.
