Danny Murphy tells talkSPORT why it won’t matter if Liverpool fail to win a trophy this season
Danny Murphy insists this season should NOT go down as a failure for Liverpool, even if they miss out on the Premier League and Champions League titles. The former Reds midfielder has hailed the teams progression under Jurgen Klopp and says supporters should be happy, even though it seems they may have to wait a little longer to end their wait for an English crown.Liverpool have only lost one league game this season and could finish in 97 points – and still not win the title4

Manchester City are the favourites to be Premier League champions again after they beat Burnley to return to the top of the table this weekend.City have now won 12 league games in a row and only Leicester and Brighton stand in their way of lifting the title for the second straight season.Murphy knows Liverpool fans will rightly be gutted if they end this brilliant campaign without silverware to show for it.But the former Red says they should be so proud of what their team has achieved this season, insisting it is a huge building block for future success at Anfield.Klopp has transformed Liverpool into one of the fiercest teams in Europe4

And he is certain that success will come under Jurgen Klopp.Speaking to talkSPORT host Jim White on Monday, Murphy said: Theres an obsession with winning trophies that I dont think should be there. What is it that you really want when you watch your team play? You want progression, you want good football and you want to be challenging.Liverpool were 25 points behind City last year how many Liverpool supporters really believed they could compete for the title and go this far in the Champions League again? Probably only a few.But I do know this: the Liverpool supporters are loving what theyre seeing and all theyve ever wanted is to be back at the top of the tree, which is competing to win the Premier League and the Champions League. When youre playing as well as Liverpool are, youve got the squad theyve got and youre enjoying watching the team – thats progression.Because of Liverpools wonderful history, they are always going to be judged in the future on what theyve won. In 20 years if we look back on this period now and if they dont win anything, we might not be all talking about it.But right now as a Liverpool fan, what do they want? They want a journey, they want to watch their team play good football and compete for trophies.Liverpool are again in the last four of the Champions League, amazing, and theyve now bridged the gap with Man City.If they go to the last day and miss out on the Premier League title and lose in the Champions League, is that an unsuccessful season? No!Liverpool thumped Porto to reach the Champions League semi-finals, where they next play Barcelonagetty4

For me, this season is a huge building block in the bigger picture of Liverpool football club. I personally believe everything is in place now for them to be competitive for the next few years. If they dont win it this season, I think theyll win in in the next few seasons, and thats the key.Progression, thats the most important thing, for me. Its progression over silverware.Im not saying Liverpool fans are sitting there saying its OK if we lose the league. There will be tears. But I think most supporters will go to a match and want to enjoy what theyre seeing and they want to be competitive. Theyll always forgive if you miss out at the last minute because of a remarkable team.Klopp is a popular man in Merseyside4

I think a lot of Liverpool fans will say, ‘were on the right path, we love Klopp and we love what were watching’.I dont think we should be judging managers like Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino just on trophies, when actually both Liverpool and Tottenham are progressing really nicely. It doesnt really matter, as long as were better than Manchester United!
